Danny's Back and How!
He started out busing tables at Jona's club but it was soon clear that Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian) had other talents, mainly singing. With the help of his dear friend Paul Williams (Doug Davidson), who acted as his manager, Danny soon had hearts fluttering and Genoa City rockin' on a whole different level. Through the years, fans watched the boy turn into a man, the singer turn into a recording star, and followed Michael Damian as he took the world by storm. This year marks the 35th Anniversary of The Young and the Restless and what better way to celebrate then to bring one of Genoa City's most beloved residents home.
Michael took a few moments to reflect on a few behind the scene reunions and share what he has been up to since his last trip to GC. Find out what he had to say!
How did your latest stint on Y&R come about?
"I got a call from the show. They asked if I was A) in town B) available and C) did I want to Rock and Roll Genoa City with a couple of songs. Did I want to come back for a weeklong celebration for the 35th Anniversary of the show? And I said 'Sounds like fun! I'm in."
What do you remember the most about your first day on the set way back when you first came on as Danny Romalotti?
"You're not talking about 1981, are you? Way back many centuries ago before the bible began [he laughed]. That's a quote from Joseph [and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat], by the way. My first show was with Doug Davidson [Paul]. I got a job as waiter-slash-busboy at Jonas' and Paul Williams worked there. We had a great time, became great friends. It was awesome. David Hasselhoff [Snapper] was on the show back then. David was always nice to me. Doug and I just finished our scene together and we were just reminiscing about how much fun we had back then. Danny and Paul go back a long, long way and it is kind of sad that their friendship drifted over the whole Christine [Lauralee Bell] thing but I am very happy with how the characters have evolved now and it was a lot of fun to have them hang out. It is addressed in the script so that is good."
What is it about Danny that makes him a fan favorite?
"He's 80's hair and spandex. I think that is what did it [laughing]. The writing was just superb. The character is only as good as he is written. Bill Bell had a brilliant mind and did an awesome job. I am so sorry we had to lose him so early. He was a father figure. We always felt that he was looking after us. What I really am thrilled about is coming back in 2008 and finding the writing is still great. There is freshness, depth, comedy and it is very layered. I don't know about all the other characters but certainly in the scenes that I have played out with Doug Davidson and Michelle Stafford [Phyllis]."
What will the fans have to look forward to?
"There's going to be a big concert. I have the Band. We are going to rock on. We won't do 'Rock on' but will do a new song written specifically for the show. That is going to be awesome. Then I am going to sing another number the day after that in an intimate setting after the big event with Daniel [Michael Graziadei]. I will play him a song that I have written for him."
Whom were you looking forward to seeing the most?
"The guard at the front gate. He and I go way back. I am joking! That guard was new and he almost didn't let me on the lot. I was like, 'I'm Michael Damian, a Capricorn [he's really a Taurus, but I digress], remember me?'"
"It is like a class reunion for me. All of the crew and cast, the production office and just the people at CBS. A fun high school class reunion."
Did you interact with any of the new characters?
"I had a brief encounter with 2 new characters, Daniel's friend Amber [Adrienne Frantz] and Paul's daughter Heather [Vail Bloom]. That was fun. I had a chance to work with Josh Morrow (Nick) which is rare for me. We put our two heads together trying to remember if we had a scene together. That was a lot of fun. I enjoyed working with Bronson Pinchot. He was fantastic! Very creative, which is fun as an actor and it keeps you on your toes. Yeah, I have been making the rounds the last couple of days. It is always nice working with Michelle, as always."
Do you have other projects coming up?
"I have been directing, writing and producing features. I have a film coming out April 29th called 'Moondance Alexander.' I co-wrote it with my wife Janeen. It stars Don Johnson, Kay Panabaker, Lori Loughlin and Sasha Cohen in her feature film debut. James Best, who is also my father-in-law and fans may remember him as the Sheriff on 'Dukes of Hazzard', is in the film. It is a family film inspired by a true story. We are really proud of it."
You have done so many things, acting, singing, writing, producing and directing, is there one thing you enjoy more than others?
"Coming back and doing the show has helped me get in touch with my on-camera acting side and it helps me as a director and producer. I have a far better appreciation for the words, not that I didn't before, but certainly seeing more beyond the dialogue. Having written a couple of screenplays and now connecting as an actor with the words, it helps me connect with actors as a director. I have enjoyed this."
Being able to do something from start to finish is very rewarding…
"Going full circle with an idea or concept is very satisfying. My wife and I came up with this idea based on her life story as a child growing up in Mississippi with her horse Checkers and this amazing adventure that unfolded for her with this animal. It was quite extraordinary what she accomplished as a 14 year old. Bringing her story to the big screen and then to DVD has been awesome. We are also very excited that it did so well on the Film Festival circuit. We won Best Picture in Newport Beach, Jury Prize in Vienna. FOX is going all out to promote this film so fans can see it."
