Love Is A Battlefield...

Four time Grammy winner, with 6 platinum and 4 gold albums under her belt, Pat Benatar has long been credited as being one of the best female rock vocalists of our time. Trained in opera and grounded in rock, few singers can match her range. The sassy rocker has been working with her husband, Neil "Spyder" Giraldo, since they penned "We Live for Love" together for her debut album In The Heat Of The Night. Married in 1982, with 2 girls, Haley and Hana, Pat and Neil have maintained a great working relationship and a solid family unit as well. Neil may be the lead guitarist in her band but he is also well known for his producing, writing and arranging talents as well. When not touring with Pat, Neil has worked with such artists as Kenny Loggins, John Waite and Rick Springfield.

When Karen Taylor (Nia Peeples) struggled with stage fright, new beau Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John) gave the Giraldos a call and they agreed to stop by Indigo and give the frightened up and coming singer a few pointers on how to tackle fear and shine onstage. At first, Karen can't face the rocker and sang with her back to Pat, Spyder and Neil. Finally, Pat revealed a little secret that even her husband didn't know that really helped Karen blossom on stage. Later, Pat and Spyder performed an haunting acoustic version of their song "Every Time I Fall Back" from their Gravity's Rainbow album.

After their performance, we sat down with the rock legends and got to know them a little bit better. Find out what they had to say below.

How did this gig come about for you?

Pat:
"We have a friend, a dear friend."

Neil:
"He's a composer on The Young and the Restless. And he has been asking us, saying 'we would love to have you on the show' and we love the show. It came at a good time. We are happy to be here."

Do you watch the show?

Pat:
"We don't get to watch it much when we are working in the studio or touring but we are happy to be on the #1 Daytime Drama."

Tell us about the song you sang today. What was the inspiration behind it?

Pat:
"It is an old song from Gravity's Rainbow titled 'Everytime I Fall Back'"

Neil:
"We do it different now. We thought it would be good for this show today because it is moodier in its acoustic form."

Pat:
"I had just had my second child. I was feeling mellow and sentimental and that what inspired the song."

Are you thinking about taking up acting?

Pat and Neil:
"(in unison and laughing) No!"

Neil:
"If it was as easy as this experience we might."

Pat:
"It was a lot harder then it looks but it was a great experience. Everyone here, cast and crew has been helpful and kind."

Writing, performing, producing, what is your favorite part of the creative process?

Neil:
"Wow! That's hard."

Pat:
"For me, it is performing live. That is my favorite part of the creative process. It is spontaneous. You have the one-on-one thing with your audience. I love it!"

Neil:
"I think writing the songs is my favorite part of the creative process. Just starting with the element, the seed that becomes the song, that's my favorite part of the process."

The storyline is about getting over stage fright. Have you ever suffered from stage fright?

Pat:
"No, I have never had stage fright. My mother couldn't get me off the stage. I have always loved it. It is my favorite place to be."

Neil:
"No, I haven't either."

Neil, how did you get the nickname "Spyder?"

Neil:
"I wish I had a great, exotic story to tell about my nickname but my wife gave me the name 'Spyder' on the first tour. I have been 'Spyder' a long time now."

This isn't your first soap connection. Neil, you have produced and performed with Rick Springfield.

Neil:
"Yeah, yeah! I produced Rick Springfield. We did 'Jesse's Girl' together and 'I've done everything for you.' He is a great guy! We see him all the time. Our kids went to school together. We hang out together as families."

Do you like working on other projects?

Pat:
"Yes, he does because then he doesn't have to work with me (she laughed)."

Neil:
"But you're easy (he smiled). No, it's fun to work with other artists."

The last time I saw the both of you was at the 2002 Golden Globes. Your daughter Haley was Miss Golden Globe that year and I think you were beaming more than she was!

Pat:
"It was so exciting. We were so proud. She was so beautiful that she looked like she should be on a cake."

Neil:
"So beautiful! She looked like an angel. She did a great job."

Pat:
"She was fantastic. She had never done anything like that before and I was so nervous for her. I was sitting there thinking, 'please don't fall' but she didn't even seem nervous."

Are Haley and Hana interested in getting into the entertainment business?

Neil:
"Both our girls are interested in the entertainment business to different degrees."

Pat:
"I wanted a doctor or veterinarian."

Neil:
"Me too!"

Do either of you have a favorite song from your catalog?

Pat:
"That is really hard. There is 'Heartbreaker', 'Hell is for Children', 'Promises in the Dark' and 'Love is a Battlefield.'"

Neil:
"It changes."

Pat:
"It depends on where you are in your life at the time, on what is relevant in the world at the time and that changes all the time."

What is coming up for you?

Neil:
"We will tour in the summer for a bit and we are in the middle of two new projects. Maybe an acoustic or orchestrated project for some of the songs. Some new songs."

What's your recipe for success in the romance department?

Neil:
"She is always right!"

Pat:
"Good answer."

Neil:
"It is not that hard."

How do you stay grounded in this crazy business?

Pat:
"I met Spyder when I was 26 years old and that was a long time ago. This is the way we have always done it. We have a strong family unit."

Do you have a career highlight?

Pat:
"One of the most incredible evenings we ever played was the night of 9/11. That was both difficult and life-changing. It went from a horrifying situation to an incredible experience in a good way. We have been playing together for 30 years and it is hard to just pick one."

Neil:
"I couldn't pick just one."

Thanks, Pat and Spyder! Happy Valentine's Day.
