BTS with Rick Dees!
Rick Dees is an internationally known DJ, entertainer and comedian. The charismatic Radio Show host may be best known for his weekly Top 40 Countdown Show that was #1 and heard by more than 70 million people worldwide. Rick wrote and recorded the runaway hit "Disco Duck" in the '70's which sold more than 6 million copies as well as the theme song to the hit movie "Meatballs." Dees currently hosts the morning show at Movin' 93.9 in Los Angeles.
Recently, we caught up with Mr. Dees while he was filming his upcoming guest appearance on Y&R and here's what he had to say about his GC experience.
How did this role come about?
"This is exciting. You know what happened was that we were talking on the radio on Movin' 93.9 and someone said 'If you were going to be a guest on a show, that runs now, which show would it be' and I said 'Not only does it run now but it has been on the air for more then 30 years and that would be The Young and the Restless. They have done more than 9000 episodes and counting. So if I could pick a show that would be it. Everybody was on board so we said let's go through the process. We went to the casting director. We went to the promotions and publicity department and we went to The Young and the Restless.com and finally we got a hit."
I understand that Movin'93.9 had a contest and picked a winner to be a guest on the show as well…
"Nancy Schlosberg was one of thousands of people who called the station, hundreds qualified to win and we pulled her name out. As fate would have it, we picked the perfect person to be on The Young and the Restless. Nancy has watched for 30 years, every single day. She brought her husband Larry and they are very excited."
Can you give us a tease as to what your role will be?
"I'm going to be a bartender. It's a stretch but my name is Rick. It is a pivotal scene. Something really important is going to happen. I just hope that it gets past the censors. Watch on Friday, November 7th. They always have the cliffhangers on Friday and this time I'm in it."
This isn't your first time on a soap…
"I have been on Passions and Days of Our Lives. I've been an episodic actor and been in film but this experience was great. Not only did I love everyone that I have worked with and they are great actors so I have got to be on my toes."
Do you have a favorite cast member or someone you look forward to seeing?
"I haven't seen my buddy Ted Shackelford (Jeff) in a long time. We raced together in the Long Beach Toyota Grand Prix. We took racing lessons together in Northern California. I remember watching him sideswipe me on the track, almost killing me (laughs). Also, Judith Chapman (Gloria) and Ms. Adrienne Frantz (Amber). Everyone here is just really good people."
How would you rate your experience on the set of The Young and the Restless?
"There was free food. The publicity and promotions department is simply the best in the business. CBS is a classic tiffany network. You just can't go wrong. I would love to do it again. Let's keep this bar going and have the characters get advice from the bartender. What an experience! It has been phenomenal."
You have done so many things, had your hands is so many cookie jars. Is there something you would still like to do?
"I would love to conduct a symphony. I don't think I would skydive. I tell my son 'don't do anything that would kill you' so I wouldn't do anything daredevil-ish. But I would like to conduct a symphony and have it be a symphonic version of 'Disco Duck'."
Don't miss Rick Dees' appearance in Genoa City on November 7th!
