Jack Abbott: 2004 - Present
November 27, 2009 marked the 20th Anniversary of Peter Bergman's tenure on The Young and the Restless as Jack Abbott. Jack has been, over the years, a cad, boldly ambitious, calculating, charming, loving, loyal, disloyal and just plain hard to peg. But one can always count on two things from John Abbott's (Jerry Douglas) eldest son. Jack will always be a mover and a shaker, and he will always be on the lookout for that next big conquest, whether it be a woman or a business deal. Smilin’ Jack will be ready to seal the deal!
In honor of Peter's 20 years as Jack Abbott, we will feature an overview of Jack's rich history in Genoa City under Bergman's reign. We will look back on Jack Abbott's deeds, both naughty and nice, and finish up with an in-depth interview with three-time Emmy® winner Peter Bergman.
Here's the four of a five-part series:
Jack Abbott: 2004 - Present
For corporate espionage, Victor was court-ordered to perform community service, and he negotiated with the Judge. Victor proceeded to renovate and opened an inner city recreation center for young people. Victor ended up mentoring Devon, a young man who had a troubled upbringing. Victor asserted his power over Jack by offering to pay off Jabot's debts on the condition they oust Jack as CEO. Jack was headed further into a downward spiral when he and Phyllis called it quits. A good man doesn't stay down for long, and Jack soon found himself living the playboy life. His free-wheeling ways eventually landed him in an affair with Jill, much to the disgrace of Ashley.
Michael and Kevin's worlds were rocked when their mother, Gloria, left Detroit and came to town and decided to live with them. Kevin was crushed when he found out his declared love of his life, Lauren, was actually heavily involved with his step-brother, Michael. In an effort to repair Kevin's reputation, Daniel and Kevin hired a punk kid to lace Lily's drink with roofies at the grand opening at the recreation center. The plan worked seamlessly at first, but the punk kid tried to rape Lily in the elevator, sending Lily to the hospital. Kevin looked like the hero, but definitely was not guilt free. The punk kid later came back to taunt Daniel and Kevin, but Phyllis and Damon scared him off for good. As Kevin served jail time, he was so badly beaten that he was sent to the hospital where he pretended to be insane to avoid more jail time. Gloria learned to set her sights on getting rich and romanced one of Genoa City's most wealthy men: John Abbott. John fell right into her trap, but her feelings soon turned real. To the utter surprise of Ashley, Jack, Michael, and Kevin, John and Gloria returned from a cruise holiday, married as husband and wife.
Phyllis's world was rocked when her son Daniel returned to Genoa City; but wanted nothing to do with her. Meanwhile, Phyllis gave romance a "go" with Damon. His mysterious past rose to the surface as it turned out he once had a son who was murdered ,and the killer was up for parole. Unable to stay out of it, Phyllis confronted the murderer. When he followed her to Damon's apartment a battle ensued resulting in Damon killing him. After deciding to all work in the same office, Paul and Chris defended Damon, and Michael defended Phyllis. This put both parties in a compromising position when Paul and Chris had to hide jail transcripts that would free Phyllis but incriminate Damon. Phyllis went to great lengths, including disguising herself as a man, and eventually she cleared their names.
As Cassie lay in the hospital in critical condition, Daniel stood blamed for everything. Cassie escaped from the hospital to tell Daniel it wasn't his fault, but this spiked her fever and, in a powerful Y&R moment, Cassie said her good-byes to Victor, Nikki, Victoria, Noah, Nick and Sharon. The monitor flat-lined, and Cassie died with Nick and Sharon in the room. Meanwhile, Phyllis and Nick had been forming a bond of their own. After first bonding at Michael's bachelor party, Nick asked Phyllis to work on Newman's Web site before the Web cast of the new line. When the Web cast failed, it was first presumed that Phyllis had corrupted the site, but, much to the chagrin of Jack, she actually had not. This further improved relations with Nick and Phyllis. As the holidays rolled around, Phyllis and Daniel made amends with the Newmans by bringing by pie on Thanksgiving, further strengthening Phyllis and Nick's friendship. Finally, when Brad and Sharon were away on business, Nick and Phyllis made love! Vowing to keep it a secret, Nick did not tell Sharon despite her confession that she kissed Brad.
With Jack and Phyllis already at odds with business, Phyllis and Nikki proposed an idea for a spa to Victor, who, as a Christmas gift for Nikki, agreed to fund it. When Jack denied the venture to fall under Chancellor Industries, Nikki and Phyllis took it to Jill, who gave it the green light under Jabot. This move infuriated Jack, who threatened to sue Victor if he moved forward. Gloria was in a heap of trouble of her own. Her ex-husband, Terrible Tom, a.k.a. Kevin's abusive father, returned to town, and, since they never officially divorced, he blackmailed Gloria so that John would not find out. With their mutual hatred of Lauren and Michael respectively, Sheila and Tom decided to team up. First Ashley and Michael got the upper hand when scheming against Tom. Ashley pretended to be interested in Tom, but really the duo set him up landing him in jail. This move only added fuel to his fire. Feeling the walls caving in, Tom made a last ditch effort to have Gloria meet him in an alley. Furious, John overheard the conversation and left the house. Seeing this, Ashley panicked yelling for Gloria to call the police after she chased after him. When she arrived, she found Tom shot and picked up the gun just as police arrived, leaving her accused of the crime. As Michael tried to get information from Tom as he lay in the hospital about Lauren, Tom flat-lined.
2006 started with Ashley facing prison time for Tom Fisher's death, covering for her father John. When John finds out that Ashley is covering for him, he suffers another heart attack. Jack tells Ashley that with her history of buckling under pressure, the police will believe her story. Against Gloria's protests, John called the DA and took responsibility for Tom’s death. John received a seven year sentence. Gloria feared that once John was imprisoned that Jack and Ashley would turn on her- and they did. Jabot was rocked by tainted moisturizing cream thanks to Gloria's handiwork. Gloria wanted to get back at Jack and Ashley. John Abbott monitors the situation from prison. Kay, Jill, Jack and Ashley work furiously to try to contain the situation, but when one victim died after using the cream, an investigation began. District Attorney William Bardwell and a forensic team search the Jabot lab, quickly finding the cleaning solvent that was found in the cream. He announces that since only the promotional jars were tainted; someone that worked at Jabot was the saboteur. Jack hires a new crisis P.R. rep named Carmen Mesta, who promptly suggested he step down from Jabot since he associated with the bad PR.
Phyllis wanted to reunite with Jack, but Jack tried to manipulate her for his own purposes and she quit her job at Jabot. Later, Phyllis bonds with Nick over the loss of Cassie. Sharon had become distant in her grief, while Phyllis was there for Nick when he needed it. The two began a passionate love affair. Phyllis found out she was expecting. When the found themselves stranded on a business trip in Los Alamos, New Mexico, due to a lightening storm, Phyllis finally admitted that she was pregnant and the baby may be Nick's. Nick promised to be there every step of the way, no matter what. Later, Nick revealed that he was the father. Sharon learned that Phyllis was pregnant when they got into a car accident while on a business trip. Sharon asked for a divorce, and Nick moved in with Phyllis.
Genoa City faced the loss of John Abbott when he suffered a series of strokes that left him brain dead. Jack, Traci and Ashley began a bitter feud against the Fishers, namely Gloria, whom they blame for bringing Tom Fisher into their lives, which landed them in court, fighting for control of John's house and inheritance. Jack began receiving ghostly visits from his late father, who was not happy about Gloria’s treatment. Jack schemed to win back Jabot, bringing in Ji Min Kim to strip Jill's authority as CEO of Jabot. Carmen Mesta learned of Jack's behind-the-scenes manipulations to get Jabot but promised that she wouldn’t share any of the information with anyone. She was later found murdered behind Neil's new Jazz club called Indigo. Everyone was a suspect.
Billy returned to Genoa City and quickly formed an alliance with Jack to get Jabot back under the Abbott family's control. Jack and Jill confronted Billy about his money problems and he admitted to owing thousands of dollars to bookies money back in Miami. Jack offered him a lucrative job at the House of Kim in Hong Kong. Billy told Jill that he would be leaving town immediately. Victor found out that Jack owned House of Kim, which meant he was tied to Jabot. Victor and Michael agreed to team up and bring Jack down.
Jack found himself attracted to the recently single Sharon Newman and they soon fell in love. They decided to take it slow because of her recent divorce and Noah. Sharon struggled with her residual unresolved feelings for Brad Carlton, with whom she had an affair with while married to Nick. Jack bonded with Noah.
During an ice storm, the power went out, trapping Jack and Phyllis in an elevator. Phyllis went into labor and Jack delivered her baby. Baby Summer had a very special place in Jack’s heart. Later, Sheila returned to town, looking like Phyllis after plastic surgery, and kidnapped Lauren, Phyllis, Summer and Fen. Nick and Jack teamed up to address the media. Eventually, Lauren was able to shoot and kill her evil nemesis. Everyone was freed.
Jack helped the feds put away a corrupt Senator, inspiring him to run for office. He hired David Chow to run his campaign. David Chow was in town to find justice for his dead girlfriend Carmen Mesta. Jana Hawkes was found to be Carmen's killer, and she almost killed Kevin and Colleen, but later it was discovered that she had a brain tumor that caused her behavior. J.T. and Professor Adrian Korbel were able to figure out what was going on and rescued Kevin and Colleen in time. It was around this time that Brad and Traci discovered that Colleen had broken up with J.T. and was dating Professor Korbel. Jack invited Colleen to live at the Abbott mansion.
Jack called a press conference to announce that he was going to build an NVP Supercenter on the land that he had green-lit for the Wellness Spa at Clear Springs. Once he explained what he wanted to do with it, Victor and Phyllis were on board, but Nikki refused to go along with it. Nikki decided to run as Jack's opponent, driving a wedge between her and Victor. David checked into Sharon’s past to see if it would affect Jack's campaign and Jack proposed to Sharon. Meanwhile, Jack's business partner Ji Min started to have feelings for Jill. Victor and Michael confront Ji Min about Jack owning Jabot. Ji Min recorded a conversation with Jack to get him to confirm this and Victor and Michael use it against Jack. Kay bailed Jack out by buying Jabot so no one would find out that he owned it but threatened Ji Min that if Jill went with him to Korea, Kay would bring charges against him.
Phyllis and Sharon's on-going feud reached new heights at a cliff-side photo shoot. Phyllis threatened to tell Jack about Brad's affair with Sharon. Dru tried to referee but Sharon, in a struggle with Phyllis, stumbled over the side of the cliff. Dru tried to reach for her and went over as well. Later, Sharon was found dead but was revived. Dru was never found. Jack felt that if he had been there it wouldn't have happened.
Jack and Sharon were married and Victor didn't like the idea. Their marriage was rocky from the start, after Sharon admitted to sleeping with Brad on a trip to New York. They agree to stay committed. Meanwhile, Jack fired David Chow from his campaign after he leaked video of Nikki stripping to the press. Nikki decided to hire David for her own campaign, which angered Victor, who continued to disapprove of her running for office.
Phyllis and Nick married officially and Phyllis was arrested at the ceremony for extortion from her attempt to blackmail Brad regarding his affair with Sharon. Victor encouraged Brad to drop the charges against Phyllis but he wouldn’t budge, even amidst the loss of Victoria and Brad's unborn child. Around this time, Nick boarded the Newman jet for a meeting on the Clear Springs project along with Sharon, who was scheduled for a photo shoot. The plane crashed and Nick was presumed dead. Sharon had gotten off the plane when she found out the shoot was cancelled, much to Brad and Jack's relief. Victoria realized just how much Brad loved Sharon and found comfort in J.T.'s arms. Nick’s death pushed Nikki and Victor further apart and she sought comfort in David's arms. Jack won the election by a narrow margin after video surfaced and Nikki and David locked in a steamy kiss. Later, Nick is found alive but suffered a serious memory loss. Nick believed that he was still married to Sharon. Nick's memory returned eventually, and he and Phyllis were re-united. Nikki sold her shares of Jabot to Katherine so that she could have enough money to buy out Victor's interest in NVP. Victor was furious when he found out that she had known about Jack having sold his shares of Jabot to Katherine, leaving Victor with no leverage to hold against Jack. Victor confronted Ji Min for his involvement and promised to get his revenge. Ji Min threatened to go public with the details of the whole scandal, throwing everyone into a panic and then he was found dead by Jill in his hotel suite. Jack was the number one suspect when a dog's hair was found on Ji Min's clothing, but Victor also had a dog, making both men top suspects.
A parking garage in Clear Springs collapsed, trapping many Genoa City residents. Jack and Nick teamed up to rescue an injured Sharon, but could only get Nick and Sharon out. Left behind in the structure, Jack scribbled notes of love and thanks to his family and friends. Cane and J.T. were able to rescue Katherine and Amber. Noah, who had been with Paul, Maggie and Lauren, suffered some cracked ribs and a ruptured spleen and was raced into surgery. An injured Adrian was able to help a very pregnant Victoria out of the rubble but, before they were completely safe, Victoria was struck by falling debris. When Victor saw a hand sticking out of the debris, he reached out and pulled away some concrete to see Jack. It was discovered the Victor’s company drilling for methane gas miles away had caused the garage to crumble. Victoria laid in a coma for weeks, putting the baby's life in jeopardy. Victor and Nikki fought bitterly on whether the baby should be removed to save Victoria's life or not. Later, the doctors delivered the baby boy by c-section and J.T. was proven to be the father. Nikki decided to sue Victor for causing the collapse, and he called in all of her loans, alienating the whole family through the process. Jack agreed to join Katherine and Nikki in the lawsuit. Nikki and Victor divorced. Nikki and David married.
Jack and Sharon suffered some blows as Brad tried to win Sharon's affections and Jack battled Gloria over John’s inheritance. The judge offered equal division of the Abbott Mansion between Jack and Sharon and Jeff Bardwell and Gloria. Jeff and Gloria tortured Jack and Sharon at every turn, including redecorating the Abbott Mansion, hoping that Jack would cave in. Jack retaliated by hiring a John look-a-like named Alistair to “haunt” Gloria. Soon Jack and Sharon had the mansion to themselves. Meanwhile, Nick, Jack, Phyllis and Sharon decided to launch a new magazine called Restless Style, after Victor fired Nick from Newman Enterprises thanks to his ongoing feud with Nikki. Victoria awoke from her coma and moved in with J.T. to begin a new life together. They soon married. Victor became preoccupied with thoughts of Hope, who was dying of cancer. She begged him to watch over Victor Jr./Adam. He agreed. Adam, as he liked to be called, arrived in Genoa City and began working at Newman Enterprises, much to Victoria, Nick and Nikki's surprise. Victor reached out to his old friend Eric Forrester to throw a wretch into Jack and Nick's new venture. Nick confronted his father which ended in a shouting match. Phyllis convinced him to bond with Adam before Victor had time to break him down. About this time, Victoria's good friend Sabrina visited Genoa City to see how Victoria’s new life was going. Victor immediately bonded with the exotic beauty over their love of art. Restless Style launched successfully. Nikki found out that her new husband had a gambling problem and was heavily in debt.
Victor and Sabrina were married. Jack plotted, behind Nick's back, to post an article slamming Sabrina in Restless Style. Colleen broke up with Professor Korbel and moved back into the Abbott mansion with Jack and Sharon. David’s gambling problem gets out of hand. He had a series of meetings with a shady character named Walter, who revealed that David was Ji Min's killer. David wondered whether he should kill Gloria after she spotted him gambling and losing in Vegas, but Gloria and Jeff checked out of the hotel before he could get to them.
Sabrina and Victoria reunited after the wedding and began working on the Charity Ball. Sabrina revealed that she was pregnant. Sabrina convinces Victor to mend fences with his children. Jack worked furiously behind-the-scenes to re-write Adrian’s article on Sabrina and make it more scandalous, upsetting Sharon in the process. Nick finds out that Jack dug up dirt on Sabrina, in a quest to make Restless Style more controversial. Paul began to look into David’s past and discovered that one of his ex-wives and a step-daughter died under suspicious circumstances. Paul learned that David was living under a false identity. His real name was Angelo Serafini and had known mob associates, including Walter. Jill found a photo of Ji Min with Walter while going through his things. Nikki decided to end her relationship with David which sent him out on a mission to buy morphine. He convinced Nikki to at least appear at the Charity Ball with him. Meanwhile, Skye, a friend of Adam's turned up missing after winning a poker game with David. David slipped the morphine in Nikki's ginger ale at the Charity Ball. J.T., hot on David's trail, slipped a drugged Nikki off to Paul, who rushed her off to the hospital in time to save her life. David was waiting outside for the limo when Sabrina, who wasn’t feeling well, asked for a lift home. He agreed reluctantly, barely noticing the new driver who placed a mysterious call. A hit had been placed on David and Nikki, but it was David who died in the fiery crash. Sabrina and her unborn child died from complications later. Nikki woke up in the hospital, horrified that her husband had tried to murder her. It wasn’t long before Victor blamed Nikki for Sabrina's death. Walter got away. Victor vowed that he would make Sabrina's killers pay. Even after Sabrina's death, Jack delighted in the magazine sales after printing the Sabrina expose. Skye's body was found in the stall that housed Nikki's horse, a gift to her from David.
Victor tracked Walter down to Mexico. Victor posed as a fisherman and took Walter out to sea during a bad storm. Paul and Nikki went to Mexico to try and stop Victor from doing something he might regret later. When the ship is found wrecked and the two men go missing, Victor is presumed dead, but the body turned out to be Walter's. Meanwhile, Nick and Phyllis wrote an article titled “The Real Jack Abbott” in retaliation to Jack's article about Sabrina. Once the news was released that Victor was presumed dead, Jack began plotting the next expose on Victor’s death. Adam assumed control of Newman Enterprises, per Victor's latest will, and immediately fired Victoria. Adam and Heather moved into the ranch, shocking everyone. Nikki found Victor alive on a beach in Mexico and tried to convince him to come home. He made it clear that they had no future together. Victor surprised everyone by returning to the ranch and promptly threw Adam off the ranch and out of his life forever! Nick and Victoria were saddened when they saw Victor putting up all his walls. Fed up with the way Jack was using Restless Style as a weapon against Victor, Nick and Jack flipped a coin to decide who could buy control of the magazine. Nick bought Jack’s shares and retained control of the venture. During the process Phyllis and Jack realized that Sharon still had Nick's best interests at heart. Jack teamed up with Adam to write “Victor's Diary,” forging Victor's handwriting.
Billy returned to Genoa City and plotted with Jack to return control of Jabot to the Abbott family. Chloe arrived in town and immediately began to try and win Cane's affections, but he only had eyes for Lily. Chloe drove him home after a night of drinking and convinced him they had sex and she was pregnant with his child. Later, it was revealed that Chloe was really Kate Valentine, Esther's daughter, who had been away at boarding school. Victor went to France to grieve. Jack and Adam put the finishing touches on Victor's story. Heather tried to prove that Victor was responsible for Walter's death. Adam realized that Jack set him up to take the fall if anything went south with Victor's fake diary. Nikki sent Ashley to Paris to comfort Victor and make sure he was safe. Sharon went to Paris with Noah on a school trip. Nick caught up with her there as he tried to find Victor. Jack was furious but realized he had pushed Sharon away with all of his lies. Kay was presumed dead but later it was proven to be her look-a-like, Marge. Jack was shocked when Ashley arrived at the “funeral” on Victor's arm. Kay left part of her Jabot stock to Gloria. Jack schemed with his siblings, Gloria and Jeff to gain control of the Jabot stock once again. Ashley announced at the last minute that she was taking charge and would be working with Billy. Adam ended up behind bars for his part in forging Victor's “diary.” There wasn't enough evidence to prosecute Jack, but Victor vowed to make him pay. Kay remembered who she really was and returned to Genoa City with Marge's good friend Murphy. They fell in love and were married.
Sharon served Jack divorce papers, angered by all of his lies and for his vendetta against Victor. Brad tried to win her affection once more but she turned him away. Sharon still had feelings for Nick, and they acted on those feelings when stranded at the Abbott during a winter storm. That same night, Brad fell into the icy lake saving Noah from an icy death but lost his life in the process. Nick and Sharon agreed to part so he could work on his marriage to Phyllis. Sharon drowned her sorrows after Brad's funeral at a local dive bar and was joined by Billy, who wanted to tie one on himself due to his troubles with women. Chloe had given birth to his child but had convinced Cane that it was his baby. Lily dumped Billy because of his lies, and she still had feelings for Cane. Sharon spent the night in bed with Billy. Finally, Billy took responsibility for his child, thanks to Jack's advice. Cane and Chloe parted ways, and Jack has Chloe move into the Abbott mansion. Billy and Chloe were wed, but were surprised to see Mac in the back of the room. Mac decided to stay, which threw a wrench in Chloe's plans for a happy marriage, as Billy clearly still had feelings for Mac. Sharon found out that she was pregnant and didn’t know who the father was. Jack stepped up and said he would support her no matter who the father was. Jack was shocked to learn that Ashley was pregnant with Victor's child, since it was believed that she could no longer have children after her battle with cancer. After Adam was badly beaten in prison, Ashley asked Victor to mend fences. Victor agreed to keep Adam under house arrest at the Newman Ranch. Adam plotted revenge by befriending Ashley and making her think she was going crazy. He manipulated her to believe she was being haunted by Sabrina. During one of these “visions”, Ashley fell down the stairs and lost her baby. Adam paid a corrupt doctor to convince her she was still pregnant.
Jack hired a savvy business woman named Mary Jane, who was later revealed to be his ex-wife Patty Williams. She had a lot of plastic surgery to disguise her, which happened to be paid for by Victor. Victor planned to use her to enact his own form of revenge against his bitter rival. Mary Jane slowly becomes unraveled behind-the-scenes and began talking to her stuffed cat. Meanwhile, Sharon's world was falling apart. Chloe confronted her about her pregnancy. Nick and Phyllis were fighting about his lingering feelings for Sharon. Phyllis kicked him out of the house and found solace in Jack's arms, witnessed by Mary Jane. Mary Jane, in turn, kissed Summer with peanuts on her lips which sent Summer into anaphylactic shock. Summer went into a coma and suffered some brain damage as a result. J.T. and Victor soon suspected that Mary Jane might be behind Ashley's gas-lighting, which is really Adam. Victor eventually cut off all financial support from Mary Jane and told her it was time to call it quits and get out of town, but she was determined to stay and win back Jack's love.
The real Phillip Chancellor III returned home, revealing that he had not really died and had sent Cane in his place in a misguided attempt to “reunite” the family without having to reveal he was gay. Cane explained that he knew that Chloe's baby was Billy's all along because that was the only explanation as to why the DNA “matched” the Chancellor DNA. Cane was devastated by everyone’s anger. He just wanted a family, and Phillip was trying to help him. Cane planned on leaving town but came back when it was discovered that Lily had ovarian cancer. Meanwhile, Adam went as far as seducing his attorney Rafe to cover up his evil deeds. Later, Adam would tell Rafe that he was “confused,” but Heather broke up with him. Adam found a very distraught Mary Jane on Newman grounds and decided to hide her and use her in his crusade against Victor. After a secret investigation, Paul and Jack realized that Mary Jane was really Patty Williams, and Victor was behind her return to Genoa City. Paul, Jack and Victor formed an uneasy alliance in order to find Mary Jane before she could hurt any of their loved ones or herself. Billy spilled all of Victor's dirty secrets in front of Ashley, and Victoria and Victor was forced to admit the truth. Mary Jane kidnapped Colleen while on the run from the police. Jack, Paul, Victor and J.T. were hot on her tail. When she became delirious after a spider bite, Colleen went for help. While trying to get into a boat, Colleen fell, hit her head, and drowned in the same lake her father died in. Jack found Colleen but Mary Jane wouldn't allow him to resuscitate. Mary Jane shot Victor when he arrived. Later, Traci made the ultimate sacrifice and donated Colleen's heart to Victor after complications from the bullet wound. Mary Jane was sent to a mental hospital. When Paul and Jack met her psychiatrist, Emily, they were shocked that Patty had the plastic surgery to look just like her doctor, and “Mary Jane” was born!
Both Ashley and Sharon checked into a psychiatric hospital to deal with their issues. When Sharon went into labor, Adam saw a way to give Ashley “her baby.” He forced the doctor to convince Sharon that her baby had died in childbirth, and then Adam gave her baby to Ashley, convincing her she gave birth. Ashley decided that she didn't want to be a part of Victor's schemes and lies any more. She wanted a fresh start with her baby girl Faith and Abby. Jack was elated. Victor understood and offered her the chance to stay at Newman Ranch.
