Marlee Matlin Spotlights a Very Special Event

June 21, 2011- Marlee Matlin teamed up with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, the Las Vegas Hilton, Associated Television International and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to pull off a very special event the day before the Emmys®. More than 100 hearing-impaired children and adults from the Las Vegas area would receive the gift of hearing. A team of audiologists and volunteers were on-hand to work together on the precise fitting of custom-made, state-of-the-art hearing aids for the recipients aged from two to 53. Celebrities in town for the Daytime Emmys® were invited to follow the recipients through the fitting process and witness the patient, along with their family, hearing for the first time. Christian LeBlanc (Michael), Daniel Goddard (Cane) and Kate Linder (Esther) joined a host of celebrities including Donny and Marie Osmond, Kyle and Chris Massey, Susan Lucci, Sherri Shephard and Ace Young. There were a lot of tears seen around the room, but they were tears of pure joy. A mother watching her son hear her voice for the first time. A man hearing his granddaughter call out to him. Little miracles. It was a good day.

The Starkey Foundation

In 1984, the Starkey Hearing Foundation started with a simple premise: "Alone we can't do much. But, together we can change the world." With “So the World May Hear” as his goal, Starkey Hearing Foundation founder William F. Austin built an organization upon this vision. Today the Foundation is sustained by the efforts of thousands of volunteers and donors around the world. Donor support allows the foundation to deliver more than 50,000 hearing aids annually through more than 100 hearing missions a year in countries stretching from the U.S. to Vietnam. In addition to giving the gift of hearing, the Foundation promotes hearing health awareness while supporting research and education.
